When people talk about vitamin D, they usually mean vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is unique because it can be produced in the skin with the help of sunlight. That's why it's often called the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D3 can also be obtained through food or dietary supplements, such as Vitamin D3 STADA 2,000 IU. Vitamin D is involved in various important processes in the body, such as the normal function of the immune system, the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, and the normal absorption and utilization of calcium.*

Why might it be beneficial to take a vitamin D supplement?

One in two adults in Germany has a vitamin D deficiency.** While a balanced diet can help compensate for a vitamin D deficiency, this is difficult. To obtain 1000 IU of vitamin D3 per day through food, one would have to eat, for example, 2 kg of Gouda cheese (45% fat in dry matter) or 15 eggs.***

What can lead to a vitamin D deficiency?

1. Insufficient sun exposure

The main cause of vitamin D deficiency in the population is obvious: a lack of sun exposure on the skin. From October to March, the UVB intensity in Germany is simply too low.

2. Actively Avoiding Insufficient Sun Exposure

Even in summer, it can happen that the sun's rays aren't strong enough for the skin to produce sufficient vitamin D. This occurs when sufficient sun exposure is actively avoided, for example, by using sunscreens or day creams with a sun protection factor; by spending most of one's time indoors (e.g., professionals or residents of care facilities); or by wearing concealing clothing.

3. Certain groups of people may have a vitamin D deficiency:

People over 70 years of age. In this age group, vitamin D synthesis in the skin is reduced.

Overweight people. Vitamin D is partially stored in fatty tissue and does not enter the bloodstream.

People with dark skin. In people with dark skin, the skin's capacity to synthesize vitamin D is significantly reduced. The reason: The dark pigment melanin acts as a kind of natural sunscreen.
