What is apple pectin useful for?

Apple pectin is the optimal food source for bacteria (called Bacteroidetes) that support the excretion of sugar from the body. If the Bacteroidetes bacteria have sufficient apple pectin available, they multiply and establish a permanent home in our bodies.

Intestinal Bacteria and Their Function

Intestinal bacteria have numerous functions, including the digestion of food. All our intestinal bacteria have one thing in common: they can be divided into two large groups, the Bacteroidetes and the Firmicutes. In a healthy intestinal flora, these two groups are present in an optimal ratio of 1:1, meaning that there are approximately equal numbers of each in the intestine.

However, in overweight individuals, it is common for the intestinal flora to be imbalanced, with the Firmicutes group of bacteria becoming significantly predominant. The ratio can be as much as 2,000:1. The intestine then contains 2,000 times more Firmicutes than Bacteroidetes.

Firmicutes have the unique ability to break down food components that are normally indigestible for humans (namely, fiber and complex carbohydrates). This creates a large amount of carbohydrates in the intestine—much more than in an intestine with an optimal bacterial ratio—which are absorbed in addition to the calories eaten. This hidden intake can amount to an additional 200 calories per day.

In addition, the shift in the bacterial ratio—toward Firmicutes—can take on a life of its own: The more carbohydrates (e.g., sugar, pasta, etc.) are consumed, the more comfortable the Firmicutes feel and the better they can multiply in the intestine.
